Forging Ingots for the Power Sector
Power plant forgings run at high temperature and pressure for decades, so the steel must be clean, homogeneous and tested. Chrome-moly steels are used for boiler and steam piping, and alloy steels for rotors and shafts.
Forging ingots for power sector forgings include chrome-moly and alloy grades, with IBR approval for boiler components.
Typical components
- Turbine and generator shafts
- Boiler and steam piping forgings
- High temperature valve bodies
- Flanges and fittings
Recommended steel grades
ASTM A182 F22
A creep-resistant chrome-moly steel for forged flanges, fittings and valves operating at high temperature and pressure.
ASTM A182 F11
A chrome-moly grade for forged parts in elevated temperature service in power and process industries.
SAE 4340
A tough, high strength steel with excellent hardenability. Often chosen for heavy-duty, shock-loaded parts.
EN24
A high strength, deep hardening steel with very good toughness, used where heavy sections must harden right through.
SAE 4130
A lower carbon chrome-moly steel with good weldability and strength, used in pressure and structural parts.
Choosing the ingot
Share the creep, impact and hardness requirements early. IBR approval is needed for boiler components in India.
Check the ingot size chart for available marks and weights, and read how to choose the right ingot size using the forging reduction ratio.
