Fluted Forging Ingots

Fluted forging ingots have a corrugated surface that cools more evenly and with less thermal stress. Kesari Alloys is a fluted steel ingot manufacturer for alloy grades and heavy forgings up to 23.5 tonne.

Fluted ingot sizes

Sixteen fluted sizes from M1.5 (1,450 kg) to M22 (up to 23,500 kg with hot top), including M13 at 38 × 47 × 66 inch (13,800 kg) and M17 at 42 × 50 × 72 inch (16,400 to 18,200 kg). Heavier marks come in semi inserted and over imposed hot top types.

Why fluted

The fluted section increases the surface area and reduces thermal stress, so crack-sensitive alloy steels and large weights are usually cast fluted. See square vs fluted forging ingots.

Questions

Why are heavy ingots fluted?

The corrugated surface cools more evenly and lowers thermal stress, which reduces cracking in alloy steels and in heavy sections.
