Carbon Manganese Steel Forging Ingots

Carbon manganese steels add roughly 1.3 to 1.7% manganese to a plain carbon base. The extra manganese raises hardenability and strength, so these ingots are used for forgings that are quenched and tempered.

Supplied as square, fluted and round forging ingots, M1.5 to M22 (1,450 to 23,500 kg with hot top), vacuum degassed and bottom poured. Send the grade, standard, ingot mark and shape for a quotation. Chemistry is certified on the heat test certificate.

Carbon manganese grades

In IS 1570 the Mn2 in a name means about 1.5% manganese.

20Mn2 forging ingots

About 0.20% C with about 1.5% Mn. Low carbon manganese steel for case hardened and forged parts.

27Mn2 forging ingots

About 0.27% C with about 1.5% Mn. Medium-low carbon, quench and temper grade.

37Mn2 forging ingots

About 0.37% C with about 1.5% Mn. Medium carbon manganese steel for shafts and axles.

EN15 forging ingots

BS 970 manganese steel with higher hardenability than plain carbon grades.

EN15A forging ingots

A variant of EN15. Order against the stated limits.

EN15B forging ingots

A variant of EN15. Order against the stated limits.

SAE 1541 forging ingots

About 0.36–0.44% C and 1.35–1.65% Mn. Used for forged shafts, axles and gears.

SAE 1541B forging ingots

The boron-treated version of SAE 1541, for deeper hardening.
