Steel Ingots for Upsetting and Rolling
Upsetting shortens an ingot and increases its diameter, breaking up the cast structure in the centre. Rolling, as in ring rolling, reduces it further. Both depend on a sound, well-fed centre.
We supply steel ingots for upsetting and steel ingots for rolling, cast with a hot top and vacuum degassed to keep the centre sound.
Typical components
- Upset discs and rings
- Ring rolling blanks
- Seamless rolled rings
- Large upset hubs
Recommended steel grades
EN8
General-purpose medium carbon steel with a good balance of strength and machinability. It responds to quenching and tempering in small and medium sections.
SAE 1045 / C45
A common medium carbon steel with good strength and machinability. Often used in the normalised or quenched and tempered condition.
EN19
A widely used chrome-moly steel with good hardenability, toughness and fatigue strength in the quenched and tempered condition.
EN31
A high carbon, chromium steel that reaches very high hardness and wear resistance after hardening.
Choosing the ingot
Send the finished ring or disc size and the reduction your process gives, so the ingot size can be matched.
Check the ingot size chart for available marks and weights, and read how to choose the right ingot size using the forging reduction ratio.
