Forging Ingots for Sugar Mills and Heavy Engineering
Sugar mills use very large shafts, rollers and gears that carry heavy load for a whole crushing season. Heavy engineering shops also forge large blocks, discs and rings for plant machinery.
Steel ingots for heavy forgings and forging ingots for heavy engineering are cast in the heavier M9 to M22 marks, up to 23.5 tonne with hot top.
Typical components
- Mill roller shafts
- Pinion and gear shafts
- Large discs and blocks
- Crusher and mill parts
Recommended steel grades
SAE 1045 / C45
A common medium carbon steel with good strength and machinability. Often used in the normalised or quenched and tempered condition.
EN8
General-purpose medium carbon steel with a good balance of strength and machinability. It responds to quenching and tempering in small and medium sections.
EN19
A widely used chrome-moly steel with good hardenability, toughness and fatigue strength in the quenched and tempered condition.
EN24
A high strength, deep hardening steel with very good toughness, used where heavy sections must harden right through.
SAE 4140
The American-designation counterpart of EN19 and 42CrMo4. Strong, tough and easy to heat treat.
Choosing the ingot
These parts typically use heavier ingots. Tell us the finished weight and the strength class so we can pick the ingot size.
Check the ingot size chart for available marks and weights, and read how to choose the right ingot size using the forging reduction ratio.
