Forging Ingots for Earth Moving Equipment
Earth moving machines are heavy and shock loaded, so forged parts such as pins, bushings, gears and track components need high strength and wear resistance.
Forging ingots for earthmoving equipment are cast for pins, gears, track parts and heavy shafts.
Typical components
- Pins and bushings
- Gears and sprockets
- Track and idler parts
- Bucket teeth blanks
- Heavy shafts
Recommended steel grades
EN19
A widely used chrome-moly steel with good hardenability, toughness and fatigue strength in the quenched and tempered condition.
EN24
A high strength, deep hardening steel with very good toughness, used where heavy sections must harden right through.
SAE 8620
A low carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steel that carburises to a hard surface over a tough core.
EN9
A higher carbon grade for components needing more strength and wear resistance than EN8 allows.
20MnCr5
A manganese-chromium case hardening grade used for automotive and industrial gears.
Choosing the ingot
Case hardening grades such as 8620 and 20MnCr5 are common for gears and pins that need a hard surface and a tough core.
Check the ingot size chart for available marks and weights, and read how to choose the right ingot size using the forging reduction ratio.
