Forging Ingots for Railway Components
Railway forgings are fatigue-critical and are bought against tight specifications. Axles, couplers and wheel blanks are forged from clean, sound steel with traceability by heat.
Steel ingots for railway forgings are cast for axles, coupler parts and wheel blanks, with traceability by heat.
Typical components
- Axles
- Coupler and draft gear parts
- Wheel and tyre blanks
- Springs and spring seats
- Traction gear blanks
Recommended steel grades
SAE 1045 / C45
A common medium carbon steel with good strength and machinability. Often used in the normalised or quenched and tempered condition.
EN8
General-purpose medium carbon steel with a good balance of strength and machinability. It responds to quenching and tempering in small and medium sections.
EN19
A widely used chrome-moly steel with good hardenability, toughness and fatigue strength in the quenched and tempered condition.
SAE 5160
A chromium spring steel with good hardenability and fatigue resistance.
50CrV4
A chromium-vanadium alloy spring steel with good fatigue strength and toughness.
Choosing the ingot
Railway orders run to national and Indian Railways specifications. Send the specification number and the inspection route with the enquiry.
Check the ingot size chart for available marks and weights, and read how to choose the right ingot size using the forging reduction ratio.
