Forging Ingots for the Automobile Industry
Heavy commercial vehicle parts and large machined automotive components, such as crankshafts, axle beams and steering parts, are forged from ingots when the section is too big or the reduction too high for smaller stock.
We supply forging ingots for automotive components such as heavy vehicle crankshafts, axle beams and steering parts.
Typical components
- Crankshafts
- Heavy vehicle axles
- Steering parts
- Transmission gears
- Connecting rods
Recommended steel grades
EN19
A widely used chrome-moly steel with good hardenability, toughness and fatigue strength in the quenched and tempered condition.
SAE 4140
The American-designation counterpart of EN19 and 42CrMo4. Strong, tough and easy to heat treat.
SAE 8620
A low carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steel that carburises to a hard surface over a tough core.
20MnCr5
A manganese-chromium case hardening grade used for automotive and industrial gears.
16MnCr5
A slightly lower carbon sibling of 20MnCr5, giving a tougher core after carburising.
Choosing the ingot
Ingots are the right choice for heavy sections and high reduction forgings. Tell us the finished part weight and the heat treatment so the ingot mark and grade can be matched.
Check the ingot size chart for available marks and weights, and read how to choose the right ingot size using the forging reduction ratio.
